Spring Fashion Trend: Perfectly Preppy

Transitioning into spring fashion can be difficult with the fluctuating temperatures; it’s hard to know when it’s time to bust out the bright colors and bare our pale legs again. One way I make the transition is by sticking to tried-and-true classics. A particular classic trend that is universally flattering, no matter the season or year, is dressing perfectly preppy. This usually involves structured pieces like oxfords and blazers and simple patterns and muted colors. I was so excited to be given the opportunity to create a preppy look using pieces from Sears’ brand, US Polo Association. I decided to put together two different looks—one casual and one more elevated—to show how dressing perfectly preppy is a great way to take those baby steps into spring fashion.
When I went shopping for my looks, I kept my eyes peeled for items that would fit in seamlessly with the rest of my current wardrobe. I knew I already had some cardigans and blazers to layer with, so my focus was on oxfords and other blouses. Sears clearly marked US Polo Association so I was able to locate my options easily.
After trying on a pile of items, I settled on two winners:
- Women’s Button Front Flannel Shirt- in Plaid- originally $44.00, on sale for $21.99 (Same top in a similar print; mine not available online)
- Women’s Poplin Shirt- Striped in Blue- originally $44.00, on sale for $21.99
Even though I only picked up these two oxfords, I also liked quite a few other styles. You can check out my Shop My Way catalog to see my other favorites to build your preppy spring fashion. By the way, are you signed up for Shop My Way rewards? For every purchase you make, you earn points that provide discounts on future purchases. You could earn 440 points for these two oxfords alone. I was able to use a coupon from a previous transaction to save $7.
Here’s how I styled my two new oxfords to reflect the perfectly preppy style:
Oxford: US Polo Association (similar) Cardigan: LOFT Jeans: LOFT Boots: JC Penney
I really love this casual look because it’s comfortable and classic. The gingham/plaid pattern is definitely preppy, but its soft flannel material makes it a natural choice for everyday looks. I layered it with a coordinating cardigan and paired it flattering jeans and boots. If it were warmer out, I would wear flats and remove my cardigan and add a necklace.
And for a more elevated and dressier look, perhaps for going out to dinner with friends:
Oxford: US Polo Association Blazer: The Limited Jeans: LOFT Heels: Payless
I think a pinstripe oxford underneath a structured blazer just screams preppy (in a good way). I added a colorful statement necklace for some personality and bling. If I were wearing this in a work environment, I would trade the skinny jeans for tailored slacks.
