PANTONE-Inspired Fall Color Challenge: Day 3: Koi

Happy Koi Day! It's Day 3 of the Pantone Challenge and I couldn't be more thrilled with how well it's going so far! Everyone's looks have been so great and I've had a blast clicking on all of your blogs and seeing your twist on the day's color. You can check out Vivacious and Turbulence from earlier this week! Hop on over to Heidi's blog to submit your looks for the rest of the week. Today's color is Koi, which is kind of obnoxious--yes let's call colors by names of animals--but it does fit it I guess. I've never been much of a fan of orange--I hardly own any orange-colored clothes-- but I absolutely LOVE it in the fall. Orange leaves, orange pumpkins...can't get enough of it.

Alas, I have a confession. I kind of cheated today. And not even well! I've worn these pants many a times here on The Modern Austen (like here and here and here) and I've always referred to them as poppy red, even using it for that assigned day during our last challenge, but hey--sometimes it can look orange...ish?! Whatever. I like it anyway. I'm considering getting these pants altered because they bunch in the knees like Fran did. Worth it?

(Try not to make too much fun of my squinty eyes...)

Tee: J.D. Eicher & the Goodnights Hoodie: c/o cousin (similar) Denim Jacket: Old Navy Pants: Land's End Boat Shoes: Keds via Kohl's (similar)

This is probably one of the most casual looks I've featured on this blog. I initially wanted to pair these pants with a polka dot sweater, but then I felt like it was too much. Then I thought a black and cream striped boatneck top, but that was very similar to the last time I wore these pants. And then I thought, why not show a comfortable outfit? I don't always wear dressier clothes like the ones I show on the blog. Sometimes it's just nice to throw on a t-shirt and hoodie.

This time, however, I decided to show how you can wear a band tee in a more put-together way that's still comfortable.

By the way, my band t-shirt comes from J.D. Eicher & the Goodnights, a band that formed at my college and has since grown significantly. They define themselves as pop-rock with similar sounds to The Script, Keane, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Killers. I've been to several of their concerts and am always eager to buy their new albums. It doesn't hurt that I'm good friends with the former drummer and have grown up in church with the pianist! Of course, the last two times I saw J.D. I was "that girl" who sat in the front row wearing their t-shirt, cheering for "White Lily," and he noticed both times...oy vey. Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend them. Their new CD Into Place is so spot-on right now.

Koi 2

To spice up this casual "koi" look . . .

  1. I started off with just the t-shirt and bright-colored cropped pants. Normally I would've just thrown on some jeans, but the pants make it a little more interesting.
  2. I added a zip up hoodie to add warmth and interest.
  3. I topped it off with a denim jacket. The layering effect makes it a lot more interesting and appropriate for the fall weather. I've found that the hoodie/denim jacket combination never fails in my book.

Boring Better Best

For other ways to spice up a basic tee, Jessica from What I Wore has successfully sported her favorite Indianapolis tees in a variety of ways, but I absolutely love this look.
