Refashioning a Dress into a Skirt
It's painfully apparent that I have very few "going out" clothes. Attending college in a dry town AND on a dry campus with fraternity houses as our only options left me with a closet full of decently conservative tops, jeans, and themed party costumes. Now that those costumes have been willed down and I spent the last year teaching, I have even fewer options and yet plenty more opportunities to go downtown with friends. So naturally, I made a trip to the local college town Plato's Closet! And naturally, I didn't have too much luck. If I wanted to go the skanky route, I'd be set, but I was looking for a healthy middle ground. I walked away with a black Banana Republic skirt and this dress:
I was drawn to the colors and the A-line skirt, but it was teeny. It was way too short and the skirt hit way too high on my waist (sitting right under the bust makes it appear more like a baby-doll silhouette--not what I was going for). This dress has an exposed thick zipper running up the length of the back. I knew that with a few tweaks, I could turn this into a skirt that would sit on my natural waist.
I used a seam ripper to separate the top from the elastic waistband and then snipped the zipper. I sewed a few stitches in the top of the zipper so that the zipper pull wouldn't come off of the teeth. The refashion took all of eight minutes and turned out great!
Given that it was still in the 70s Friday evening, I chose to pair it with a simple black tank from LOFT. I can't wait to wear it with black tights and boots further into fall and winter.
Arianna (who has made an outfit appearance here!) wore the perfect going-out dress. It was simple, sexy, but still conservative enough for women our age. Her hair looked super gorgeous as well.

Ashlie (my beautiful roomie who has made numerous appearances like here and here) wore the perfect evening color combination: cobalt and black. I also must mention that her hair looked AWESOME and totally flirty and fun.
I think we make a pretty cute trio, don't you agree?
I have really good friends. And we had a really good night. Hopefully they can help me expand my going out wardrobe with pieces I can actually wear to all sorts of functions.
Just a few bloopers to leave you with!
Tell me: what are some pieces you wear out to the bar or to a party? Do you just accessorize to make it dressier and "flashier" or do you wear clothes specifically for the occasion? How do you transform your day/work looks for evening?
