Organize Fabric the Easy Way
I am very fortunate to have inherited a lot of my grandma's sewing supplies and that includes lots of fabulous fabric. However, this fabric spent a lot of time smooshed in a big bag or box and was rarely used. I often forgot about what I already owned. It was obvious that I needed to organize my fabric in a better way. The only problem was that I didn't want to invest a ton of time into it and I didn't want it to take up a ton of room. Enter the comic book cardboard solution.
You're probably scratching your head, but trust me. I ordered a stack of 100 comic book backing boards that were 6 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches for about $12 on Amazon.
I took a box of my fabric and went to work! I folded the fabric and placed the comic book boards at one end and rolled it up so that it formed a mini-fabric bolt.
I secured some of the bigger bolts with a pin and placed them by color in my wonderful IKEA Kassett boxes. The boxes have a home on the bottom row of my IKEA Expedit shelving unit.
Now I can look in the right box for the right color of fabric right away instead of digging through multiple bags and boxes. I can see everything I have in a nice and orderly manner.
